The easiest way to get there if you are not staying nearby is by train. The closest stations are:

One of the most convenient stops along the river is Mega Don Quijote Dotonbori. This multi-floor store is packed with snacks, souvenirs, cosmetics, electronics, and all kinds of random items you didn’t know you needed.
It’s a great place to buy:

- Travel essentials
- Affordable cosmetics
One important tip if you plan to shop here: be patient. This Mega Don Quijote is extremely popular, and the checkout lines can get very long, especially in the evening.
If you want a smoother experience, visiting during the day or outside peak hours is definitely the way to go.
What many people don’t realize is that you can also go up to the Ferris wheel on top of the building.
I actually wanted to do it at first, but after watching a few TikToks, I decided to skip it.
The ride is very slow, takes a while to complete one full rotation, and makes some unusual (but totally normal) mechanical sounds along the way.
If you’re not a fan of heights or tend to get nervous, I wouldn’t really recommend it — unless you really want a unique view of the Dotonbori River and have extra time to spare.

Melon Pan with Ice Cream (Personal Favorite)
One of my favorite snacks near Dotonbori River was melon pan with ice cream. The warm, fluffy bread combined with cold ice cream is the perfect sweet break after walking around the area.

Walking along the river, I ended up trying a little bit of everything — teriyaki-style chicken skewers, a few meat skewers that were supposed to be wagyu (although they were a bit tough, which honestly made me question how real that wagyu actually was).
It’s easy to eat while walking and surprisingly filling. If you’re craving something sweet instead of savory, this is a must-try.
I really wanted to try takoyaki too, but the line was way too long, so I called it quits and finished the night eating it somewhere else with an ice-cold draft beer, which somehow tasted even better with all the neon lights around.
One thing to keep in mind: some people consider eating and drinking around Dotonbori River a bit of a tourist trap, mostly because prices tend to be higher.
Whether you eat here or choose another area and just come back to walk around later is totally up to you — both options work.
Dotonbori River Cruise Experience

Without the pass, the cruise may feel a bit short for the price, especially since walking along the river is free.
But if it’s included in your pass, it’s a nice way to experience Dotonbori River without spending extra money.
One of the activities we did in this area was taking advantage of our pass to hop on the river cruise, and it turned out to be a really enjoyable experience.
The cruise lasts about 20 minutes and takes you along the Dotonbori River, with a guide sharing interesting facts and stories about the area as you go.
It was a relaxing break from all the walking, and seeing the neon signs from the water made it feel even more special.

Best Time to Visit Dotonbori River
While Dotonbori River can be visited during the day, it truly comes alive at night.
- Daytime: Less crowded, easier to walk around, and maybe do some shopping, but visually less impressive.
- Evening & Night: Best time to visit. The lights, signs, and energy are at their peak.
If you want photos without massive crowds, try going earlier in the evening. After dinner hours, the area becomes extremely busy, especially on weekends.
Spring and fall (the time we visited) offer the most comfortable weather, but Dotonbori River is lively year-round.

You don’t need a full day here — 2 to 3 hours is usually enough — but it’s a place many travelers end up visiting more than once during their trip.
Hotels Near Dotonbori River
We chose APA Hotel Namba Shinsaibashi, mainly because of its location. It’s very close to Osaka City Air Terminal (OCAT), which made arriving from the airport extremely convenient, and at the same time it’s just a short walk from Dotonbori River and several subway stations.
As expected with APA Hotels, the room was small but well-equipped — clean, comfortable, and perfect for a short stay in Osaka.
These hotels are usually affordable and practical, especially if you plan to spend most of your time exploring the city.
One important thing to keep in mind is that APA is a large hotel chain, and many of their properties have very similar names.
They’re often distinguished only by the street or neighborhood they’re located on.
When we took a taxi from OCAT to the hotel, we accidentally gave the address of a different nearby APA Hotel and ended up having to pay for another short ride to get to the correct one.
So definitely double-check the exact hotel name and address before heading there.

If possible, take a screenshot of the hotel details on your phone so you can show it directly to the taxi driver — it’ll save you time, money, and a bit of unnecessary stress.
