Imagine being able to step into a world without boundaries, where colors and movement guide your senses in a unique and memorable immersive experience.

This is teamLab Borderless, an interactive museum for the whole family.

If you’ve read older guides, you might think it’s located in Odaiba, but that was its old location. Since 2024, it has relocated to the Azabudai Hills complex in central Tokyo, making it much easier to visit.

If you want to experience a unique and fascinating attraction that showcases Japanese creativity and art from a modern perspective, TeamLab Borderless is an absolute must-visit during your time in the city.

Getting There & Getting In: The Practical Stuff

Now that you know why you need to go, let’s talk about how to actually make it happen.

Because trust me, the last thing you want is to show up excited and get turned away at the door!

First things first: when you are plotting your route, make sure to search Google Maps by typing its full name: “teamLab Borderless: MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM”.

This ensures your GPS points you directly to the right spot.

Do not I repeat DO NOT type teamLabs cos it might direct you to Planets which is a different museum.

👉 Skip the stress and book your visit: To secure your preferred date and time slot, grab your tickets via this authorized Klook booking page before they sell out.

Fortunately, getting there is incredibly easy.

The museum is housed inside a building with a highly noticeable, incredibly interesting piece of modern architecture.

teamLab Borderless
Here you’ll find teamLabs Borderless!

If you take the Hibiya Line and get off at Kamiyacho Station, it is a super easy, short walk from the subway.

Once you step inside the complex, you will find plenty of signs guiding you to the entrance.

It can honestly be a tiny bit confusing at first because the building is also packed with tons of other businesses like coffee shops and high-end boutiques, but it’s definitely not impossible to find!

Just give yourself some spare time to navigate the hallways so you don’t feel rushed.

Here is a quick snapshot of the essential logistics to save for your trip:

LocationAzabudai Hills Garden Plaza B, Central Tokyo (Directly connected to Kamiyacho Station)
Opening Hours9:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Last entry is 1 hour before closing)
PriceStarts around 3,800 yen (~$25 USD) depending on the day

When the museum first reopened at its new location, tickets used to sell out standard slots instantly.

Thankfully, things have calmed down a bit since then, and it’s actually much easier to secure a slot nowadays—even as close as a day or two before your actual visit.

That being said, I still highly recommend locking in your tickets ahead of time just for total peace of mind while planning out your Tokyo itinerary.

If you are currently piecing your days together, check out my Tokyo Itinerary: How to Spend 3–5 Days in Tokyo to see exactly how to fit this museum into your schedule, or browse my master Tokyo Guide: The Ultimate Blueprint for First-Time Travelers for all your arrival essentials.

When booking a standard ticket, you will need to select a specific, timed entrance window.

⚠️ Crucial Warning: Keep a close eye on the clock! If you miss your scheduled time window, you risk losing your ticket entirely without a refund, as the museum enforces strict entry times.

If you are traveling with a big party, keeping everyone strictly on schedule in a busy city like Tokyo can feel like herding cats.

If you don’t want to worry about guaranteeing a precise arrival time, you can look into purchasing a Flexibility Pass through an authorized partner platform.

It costs a bit more, but it grants you flexible entry anytime during opening hours on your selected date—making it a total lifesaver for groups.

As for the crowds inside? It really depends on the day.

I visited on a Saturday morning, and to my surprise, it was not crazy crowded at all!

I think a big reason for this is that a lot of the tourist rush is currently split between this location and its popular sister museum, TeamLab Planets.

If you are ready to secure your spot and start wandering through this digital paradise, you can grab your entry passes directly through this authorized ticket booking page to lock in your preferred date and time.

Since teamLab Borderless is centrally located near downtown, it’s incredibly easy to pair your morning museum visit with an afternoon of shopping and exploring nearby neighborhoods.

Once you finish up here, head right over to the scramble crossing using my guide to The Best Things to Do in Shibuya!

No matter which ticket path you choose, just remember to show up with some time to spare so you can glide right past the entry gates and start exploring!

Traveling with a Disability or Sensory Sensitivities?

If you are traveling with someone who has a disability, you’ll be happy to know that teamLab Borderless offers a heavily discounted Disabled Person Pass (usually around 16 USD).

Even better? This discount also applies to one accompanying caregiver or companion.

You can easily purchase these discounted tickets online ahead of time.

Just make sure to bring your official disability certificate, ID, or documentation to show the staff at the entrance gates, and ensure your entire party enters the line together.

The layout here is completely flat and wheelchair-accessible, making it incredibly physically friendly.

However, there are a couple of important sensory factors to keep in mind before you buy:

  • Photosensitivity Note: While the museum features moving lights and intense visual projections, there isn’t a prominent flashing “trigger warning” at the gate. If you or anyone in your group is highly photosensitive, you should definitely exercise extra caution.
  • Hearing or Vision Impairments: Because teamLab Borderless relies almost 100% on pure visual projection mapping and architectural light beams, it may not be the most fulfilling experience for those with significant visual or hearing impairments.

Inside Recommendation: If you are looking for a deeper, multi-sensory experience for someone with a vision or hearing disability.

teamLab Planets might actually be the better choice.

Planets relies heavily on touch and physical textures—you walk completely barefoot, wade through physical water, and crawl across unusual, squishy floors, making it a much more tactile, all-senses-included journey.

What to Wear to teamLab Borderless: Crucial Tips

Prepping your outfit for teamLab Borderless is completely different from getting ready for a typical museum day.

Because the art here is entirely immersive and structural, what you wear will actually change how you experience it.

Here are three rules you absolutely need to follow before heading out the door:

The Shoe Rule: Keep Them On (and Make Them Comfy)

If you’ve been researching TeamLab Planets, you might think you have to take your shoes off and wade through water.

Not here! At teamLab Borderless, you keep your shoes on the entire time.

However, you will be walking across heavily sloped, uneven surfaces, and climbing up small interactive hills.

Leave the high heels, heavy boots, and flip-flops at your hotel.

Trust me, your feet will thank you for wearing a solid, comfortable pair of sneakers or flat walking shoes.

The Mirror Warning: Beware of the Floors

teamLab Borderless

This is the one that catches people off guard. Several of the most famous installations—like the Infinite Crystal World and the Bubble Universe—feature completely mirrored floors to create that mind-bending, infinite illusion.

Because of this, I highly advise against wearing short skirts or dresses unless you wear secure shorts underneath.

💡 Quick Fix: Don’t panic if you forgot and showed up in a skirt! The museum staff actually offers free wrap-around skirt rentals right outside the mirror-floor rooms so you can still enter comfortably.

The Colors: Go Light to Become the Art

teamLab Borderless
It still looks pretty nice but it would be amazing with light colored clothing!

If you want to take incredible photos, try to wear plain white or solid, light-colored clothing.

The digital projections, flowing waterfalls, and shifting light patterns will map beautifully right onto you, making it look like you are literally blending into the artwork.

Dark or heavily patterned clothes tend to swallow the lights, while light colors turn you into a human canvas.

Even though I wore all black and my photos still turned out absolutely beautiful, I just know they would have looked even better if I had gone with lighter colors!

teamLab Borderless Review

teamLab Borderless

Now, let’s get into the actual review of teamLab Borderless!

From the very beginning, the entry process was incredibly smooth.

All I had to do was show the QR code directly from my phone.

They let visitors enter in timed groups, and the line moves surprisingly fast.

Before you officially step inside, there is a dedicated locker zone.

These lockers are completely free, and there is also an area to park baby strollers.

If you are carrying heavy backpacks, bulky coats, or bags full of Tokyo souvenirs, I highly recommend leaving them in a locker.

You will want your hands completely free so you can fully enjoy and interact with this immersive experience without any distractions!

Right before you are set loose, the staff guides your group into a small room to watch a quick introductory video.

It explains how the exhibition works, the basic rules to follow, and the concept of wandering without a map.

Once those doors slide open, you are officially free to explore wherever your feet take you!

A World of Shifting Art

teamLab Borderless

One of the coolest things about teamLab Borderless is that the projections actually change depending on the season, meaning your experience will be unique.

On top of that, there is usually a special overarching projection motif that migrates across different rooms and overlays itself on top of other artworks.

During my visit, it was a beautiful flock of digital birds flying along the walls.

The very first room I stumbled into was a breathtaking space filled with projections of flowers and leaves.

I saw sunflowers, roses, daisies, and others flowers I couldn’t even name.

It felt like standing inside a classic oil painting that had suddenly come to life.

Wandering Through the Main Rooms

teamLab Borderless

As I kept exploring, I eventually found The Borderless World, the massive heart of the museum.

This is where the iconic digital waterfall cascades down a physical rock slope.

Standing there and watching the digital water split perfectly around my feet was so cool.

From there, I made my way into the Infinite Crystal World.

Walking into this room is a trip—it’s a maze of dangling LED strands and mirrored floors that make you feel like you are floating inside a kaleidoscope.

Tip: There is an app you can download before you enter that lets you select a star or a pattern from your phone and “throw” it into the room, causing all the crystals to change colors based on your choice!

I also came across a room called “The Haze” hidden behind a thick, translucent plastic curtain.

As you push past it, you step into a dark space filled with artificial fog and digital drizzle.

Colorful flowers are projected all through the mist, and if you stand still, you can actually feel an occasional, light drop of water misting onto your face.

Right next to it was another stunning space that looked like an endless field of red poppies.

You can actually walk right through them, making it feel incredibly peaceful and beautiful.

All of these main rooms are seamlessly connected by dark hallways that are artworks in themselves.

As you walk from one zone to the next, you will see digital waves crashing against the walls or mystical figures marching alongside you.

My Favorite Spot (and a Few Things I Missed!)

Without a doubt, my absolute favorite room was the Bubble Universe.

It is filled with hundreds of hanging, glowing glass spheres that ripple with light when you stand near them.

It is the absolute perfect spot to take stunning photos!

Just keep in mind that because it is so popular, the staff limits the amount of time each visitor can spend inside this specific room, so make sure to get your photos quickly!

Because teamLab Borderless is so massive and deliberately designed without a clear path, it is incredibly easy to completely miss a room.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to me with the Light Sculpture Series—the room with the dramatic, futuristic intersecting light beams.

I also completely missed the Sketch Ocean room, which is a super unique interactive space where both kids and adults can color in paper drawings of sea creatures.

Scan them, and watch them instantly come to life as digital 3D fish swimming across the walls!

What is the EN TEA HOUSE?

Tucked away inside the hallways of teamLab Borderless, the EN TEA HOUSE is an optional, upcharge café experience that blends traditional Japanese tea culture with teamLab’s signature digital art.

It functions as a real café where you can order unique, high-quality drinks—like Cold Brew Yuzu Green Tea or a Roasted Green Tea Chamomile Latte—as well as green tea-flavored vegan ice cream.

The items are priced individually (usually around 600 to 1,300 yen, or roughly $4 to $9 USD), and you pay using cashless methods like a credit card or IC card (Suica/Pasmo) right at the café counter.

How the Magic Works

  1. The Scent Preview: Right after you order at the counter and before you are seated, the staff hands you a small glass jar filled with the dry tea leaves you just chose so you can enjoy the rich aroma while walking to your table.
  2. The First Bloom: The seating area is completely dark, featuring long, black communal tables. When your server places your glass bowl of tea in front of you, the table sensors instantly recognize it. Magically, a digital flower begins to sprout and fully bloom right inside your liquid tea.
  3. An Infinite Universe: As long as there is tea left in your bowl, the flowers will continue to change, multiply, and bloom infinitely.
  4. The Interactive Ripple: The moment you pick up your cup to take a sip, the digital petals scatter across the table. When you set the cup back down in a new spot, a brand-new flower instantly starts growing in that exact position! The digital artwork only stops once you drink down to the very last drop.

Grab a One-of-a-Kind Keepsake at the Sketch Factory

Before you head home, make sure to look for the Sketch Factory, located just down the hallway outside the main museum exit.

This isn’t your average, generic museum gift shop.

Instead of pre-made souvenirs, this interactive space allows you to turn your very own digital artwork into a physical keepsake!

If you participated in the interactive Sketch Ocean room earlier in the day, you can use the digital order terminals here to find the exact sea creature or drawing you created.

From there, you can have the staff print your custom design right on the spot onto high-quality tin badges, hand towels, custom T-shirts, or tote bags.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does it take to see everything?

Expect to spend at least 2 to 3 hours inside. It’s easy to forget about time inside this exhibit.

Because it’s a “museum without a map” and you are free to wander at your own pace, you will likely spend some time looping back to find hidden corridors and secret rooms.

Can I change the date of my ticket if my plans change?

Yes! If you book your tickets directly through the official teamLab Borderless website, you can change your date and time up to three times, free of charge.

Just make sure to make the change at least 2 hours before your scheduled entrance time.

(Note: If you book via third-party platforms like Klook, tickets are generally non-refundable and cannot be changed, so double-check the fine print before buying!)

Can I re-enter the museum if I leave?

No. All teamLab Borderless tickets strictly grant single-entry only.

Once you pass through the exit gates, you cannot go back inside, so make sure you’ve fully explored all the rooms (and checked out the gift shop or restrooms) before leaving!

What to do next if it’s night time?

Getting lost in the art is the entire point, and it truly is an unforgettable, magical experience right in the heart of Tokyo!

Since the museum stays open until 9:00 PM, it makes for the perfect late-afternoon activity before grabbing dinner.
